Google Wins 2001 Webby Award for Best Practices

Google Receives Honor as Model of Overall Excellence

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – July 19, 2001 – Google Inc. today announced that it received the Webby Award for Best Practices, a new category that honors a single site that serves as a model of overall excellence, at the 5th Annual Webby Awards held in San Francisco last night. The Webby Awards is the leading international honor for websites and individual achievement in technology and creativity.

The Best Practices Award was introduced this year to formally recognize the website that receives the highest rating in the six Webby judging areas: content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience. Websites were selected and judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, an organization dedicated to the creative, technical, and professional progress of the Internet and evolving forms of interactive media.

"We are thrilled to be awarded our second Webby Award, and we’re especially honored to be the first recipients of the Best Practices Award," said Larry Page, Google’s co-founder and chief executive officer. "We’re extremely pleased that the Academy has recognized our contributions with this new award."

"We would also like to acknowledge Google users for their ongoing support," said Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder and president. "The tremendous enthusiasm shown by our users inspires us daily to continue our efforts to provide the best search experience on the web."

This is the second Webby Award for Google. Last year, Google was awarded the Best Technical Achievement Award and the People’s Voice Award, also in the Technical Achievement category.

This year’s Webby Awards ceremony was attended by more than 3,000 digerati from around the world. Awards were given by the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in 30 categories including Activism, Arts, Film, Politics, Technical Achievement, Weird and more.
