Google, RealNames Partner to Deliver Expanded Search Options
Google Integrates Internet Keywords into Award-Winning Search Destination Site
SAN CARLOS, Calif. and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – December 15, 1999 – RealNames Corporation, creators of the Internet Keyword Web addressing and navigation service, and Google Inc., one of the fastest growing search companies on the World Wide Web, today announced a relationship that will give Google users an additional source of information for locating specific information on the Internet. Under the terms of the agreement, Google will offer Internet Keyword functionality through its own destination site at www.google.com (Internet Keyword: Google). The RealNames distribution network also includes other leading search engines, browsers, portals and directory services.
RealNames Internet Keywords are intuitive, familiar names that take the user directly to the relevant web page associated with the Internet Keyword. To use Internet Keywords in Google, users simply type a company, product or brand name into the search box on Google’s homepage; if an Internet Keyword is available it will appear at the top of the search results list. The user simply clicks on that Internet Keyword to go directly to the web page for the information they are looking for. For example, web users looking to navigate to the Jeep Grand Cherokee page on the Jeep website can simply use the Internet Keyword: "Jeep Grand Cherokee" rather than the lengthy Web address http://www2.jeepunpaved.com/grand/cherokee/frameset-grand-cherokee.html.
"We are very pleased that Google has chosen Internet Keywords to provide additional navigation capabilities in their easy-to-use, highly relevant search service," said Keith Teare, president and CEO of RealNames Corporation. "The addition of Internet Keywords complements Google’s robust search services, giving Internet users an additional source for finding the exact information they’re looking for using key terms and brand names instead of dot-coms."
"By incorporating Internet Keywords into our search engine, Google is providing users with a new additional information resource for obtaining relevant results with the highest levels of speed, accuracy and precision," said Larry Page, Google CEO and co-founder. "The addition of Internet Keywords complements our advanced search technology by giving users the option of using company, product and brand names to navigate to specific web pages. Our agreement with RealNames represents an important first step for Google in partnering with innovative information providers to enable Internet users to access online information quickly and easily."
Google’s fast-growing search destination site at www.google.com currently handles more than 5 million search queries per day. PC Magazine recently honored Google’s advanced approach to search by awarding the company with its Technical Excellence Award in the web applications category.
