Google’s Targeted Keyword Ad Program Shows Strong Momentum with Advertisers

Google Delivers Advertisers Click-Through Rates Four Times Higher Than Industry Averages

JUPITER ONLINE ADVERTISING FORUM, New York – August 16, 2000 – Google Inc., developer of the award-winning Google search engine, announced today at the Jupiter Online Advertising Forum that its targeted online advertising program is delivering highly effective results for advertisers with click-through rates four times higher than the industry average for traditional banner advertising. Google’s advertising program was launched earlier this year with a distinctive approach that helps advertisers target and refine their campaigns to ensure optimal campaign performance.

Google’s advertising program enables advertisers to purchase keywords, keyword phrases or categories to target potential customers. Google uses its proprietary ad serving system to carefully match a user’s search query with a closely related advertisement based on keywords and categories. For example, entering the query "health insurance" into the search box on Google’s home page produces search results and a text-based advertisement that relate to purchasing health insurance online. This enhances the overall search experience for Google users by providing relevant, useful information on the search results page, and benefits advertisers by increasing the likelihood that users will click on a specifically targeted ad.

"Google has worked closely with advertisers to design and build a program to produce superior targeting and optimal ad performance for online campaigns," said Omid Kordestani, Google’s vice president of Business Development and Sales. "From fine- tuning the way advertisers target their audiences to helping advertisers deliver a precise message, Google works in tandem with its advertisers to deliver highly effective results."

With a growing number of Internet users selecting the Google search engine as their primary search destination site, Google offers advertisers an attractive way to reach customers worldwide. Google currently performs 14 million searches per day, with traffic growth increasing by 20 percent each month.

Since the launch of its ad program earlier this year, Google has served ads for more than 200 advertisers, including HotJobs.com, a leading online recruiting solutions company; eHealthInsurance.com, a leading website for purchasing health insurance online; and PlaceWare, a leading provider of web conferencing services.

"Google provides HotJobs.com with a creative, new advertising medium, which has worked well for us. Google’s fast and relevant search technology offers HotJobs.com a tremendous value and it’s why we’ve recently increased our presence on the site," said Marc Cenedella, vice president of Business Development for HotJobs.com.

Google’s quick-loading text-based ads appear at the top of search results pages and are highlighted as sponsored links, clearly separating ads from the search results. Google does not use GIFs, pop-ups, animations, or flashing logos, keeping its website clutter-free and focused on search. "Our continued focus on providing users with the best search experience has made Google an indispensable tool for millions of Internet users," said Sergey Brin, co-founder and president of Google. "The momentum of our advertising relationships is also a strong validation of the high quality and appeal of our service. Google’s award-winning and highly effective search engine is used by millions of people around the world every day, making it an appealing resource for online advertisers."

Designed for Internet users worldwide, Google’s search engine offers web surfers simple, fast, and highly relevant search results. The key features of Google’s search engine include its ease of use and clean interface, and highly relevant results. Google is based on a variety of innovative technologies, including sophisticated text matching and its advanced, patent-pending technology, PageRank(tm), which ensures that the most important results always come up first. This scalable approach to search enables Google to get better as the Internet gets bigger. In addition to its search destination site at www.google.com, Google also powers search for 80 other destination and portal sites in 20 countries.
